Could AI be reducing productivity?

According to this article in InfoQ, a study by Upwork has found

“that while 96% of C-suite leaders expect the use of generative AI tools to increase overall productivity levels, 77% of surveyed employees say they have actually decreased their productivity.”

The article goes on to outline this may be due to a lack of AI strategy and a lack of proper integration and training.  There are two key themes that strike me as important.

The Importance of a Good AI Strategy

In the rapidly evolving digital landscape, having a well-defined AI strategy is paramount. Organisations that harness the power of AI effectively can transform their operations, making them more efficient, innovative, and competitive. Having seen first-hand the varying rates at which employees assimilate, apply and implement AI technologies, I believe it is important that organisations work with a partner that specialises in developing strategic AI capabilities and ensures that AI integration is a core strategic pillar influencing decision-making and operational excellence.

A comprehensive AI strategy involves several key elements:

  1. AI Literacy and Training: Ensuring that every layer of the organisation, from the C-suite to frontline professionals, understands AI's potential and limitations is crucial. This includes tailored educational programmes and continuous learning opportunities.

  2. Holistic Integration: AI should be embedded into the DNA of the organisation, influencing all aspects of operations and decision-making processes. This holistic approach ensures that AI is leveraged to its fullest potential, driving innovation and efficiency.

  3. Strategic Alignment: AI initiatives must align with the organisation’s broader strategic goals. This ensures that AI projects are not pursued in isolation but contribute directly to the organisation’s long-term objectives.

The Importance of Measuring Productivity Properly

Accurate measurement of productivity is a cornerstone of effective business management. Many organisations fail to measure productivity comprehensively, so any statistics on productivity improvements are often subjective.  Productivity is not a measure of output per hour or fee earner utilisation, it is a financial metric that cuts across an entire organisation, considering all factors that contribute to value creation.

There’s no doubt in my mind that developing a robust AI strategy and accurately measuring productivity are essential for modern organisations to thrive. By focusing on these areas, businesses can unlock significant value, drive innovation, and maintain a competitive edge in an increasingly AI-driven world.

As part of my commitment to improving organisational productivity, I am committed to helping organisations navigate this journey, ensuring they are well-equipped to lead in their respective fields.
